Health Centre

WHAT WE DO

The Health Centre at Birkenhead College provides excellent support and administers first aid and immediate care to students and staff who become unwell or are injured at school.

  1. Students are offered a first aid assessment, first aid treatment and sent back to class when recovered, or sent home as necessary.
  2. If you have given consent on your child’s enrolment form, Panadol may be offered for headaches or other pain.
  3. We contact a students’ caregiver or emergency contact if and when necessary.
  4. In case of an emergency we would call 111 and then make contact with a parent or caregiver.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

Students who need to take medication at school (long or short term) may bring their medication into the Health Centre. It will be stored in our locked cabinet and administered according to the directions on the label. Students should NOT carry medication in their school bags, unless they have consulted with our School First Aider. Please feel free to contact the Health Centre with any queries regarding medications.

GOING HOME SICK

All students going home sick must do so through the Health Centre. They will be signed into the Sick Bay and marked on our attendance record. We will then make contact with a parent or caregiver to arrange being collected from school.

CONCUSSION POLICY

If you have been diagnosed with a concussion, you will need to supply a note/email from home stating you have medical clearance before you can take part in practical PE lessons or physical activity.

We understand this can be frustrating, however it is important to follow medical advice.

CONTACT DETAILS

A Health Information form is given to all students at enrolment.  Please advise the Health Centre of any new medical conditions that your child develops while they are enrolled at Birkenhead College and ensure contact details are kept up to date. It is essential to have these numbers on hand should an emergency arise.

Should you change address, job or cell phone please advise School Administration as soon as possible.

IN-SCHOOL CLINICS

At times we have outside health providers offering clinics within school. This includes Asthma NZ, Public Health (WDHB), Lumino the Dentist, Health West and other services.

Students may self-refer to the Health Centre as well as request to see a Public Health Nurse. At times, assistance in making an appointment with their own GP or other services may be requested.

PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC

We have a successful and well-utilised physiotherapy clinic available at school, as a satellite clinic of PhysioAction.

Appointments are available on Mondays from 7:30am (limited hours each day) and are free for all staff and students for accident-related (ACC covered)  injuries. Bookings may be made at the Health Centre. Students under 15 years of age will need signed parental permission to be treated.
